El Ministerio de Salud Pública informó que en 2020 hubo 718 suicidios en Uruguay, una leve caída en comparación con el año anterior, cuando 723 personas se quitaron la vida.
Del total de personas que se suicidó en Uruguay el año pasado, el 80,92% eran hombres, y el 19,08% restante, mujeres.
La información proporcionada por la cartera también da cuenta de cuál es el método más elegido para la autoeliminación: el 70,47% lo hizo a través del ahorcamiento, el estrangulamiento o la sofocación.
Rocha es el departamento con más suicidios por habitantes, con una tasa de 44,5 cada 100.000 personas (el promedio nacional es 20,3). En el extremo opuesto, Rivera es el departamento con menos autoeliminaciones, con una tasa de 15,6 cada 100.000 en 2020
El subsecretario de la cartera, José Luis Satdjian, indicó este viernes en conferencia de prensa en conmemoración del Día Nacional de Prevención del Suicidio que la problemática “es más urgente que nunca”.
Según el MSP, se registra una leve caída del 0.25 en la tasa de mortalidad por esta causa en comparación con el 2019, cuando se registraban 20.55 suicidios por cada 100.000 habitantes.
Además, se registra la mayor cantidad de autoeliminaciones entre los hombres en comparación con las mujeres y la mayor tasa se registra en la población de entre 80 y 84 años, que suma un promedio de 51,7 muertes por cada 100.000 personas.
Por otra parte, las autoridades expresaron preocupación por el aumento de los suicidios entre los jóvenes de entre 15 y 24 años, que aumentó un 45% con respecto al 2019.
“Se quitó la vida un joven cada tres días y día por medio se la quitó o se la quitaron, porque la segunda causa es el homicidio”, denunció la directora del área Adolescencia y Juventud de la cartera, Lorena Quintana.
«Es un tema que nos tiene que tener a todos trabajando interinstitucionalmente. (…) Muchos suicidios se pueden prevenir con actuaciones oportunas y a tiempo. Todos nosotros tenemos la potestad para prevenir un suicidio. Tenemos esa herramienta al alcance de la mano», insistió.
Las cifras de Uruguay siguen “muy por encima” de la media mundial, advirtió Horacio Porciúncula, referente del Área de salud mental del MSP. «Siempre estamos muy por encima de 10 (suicidios por cada 100 mil habitantes) y eso marca la búsqueda de algunas explicaciones mucho más complejas que solo las circunstanciales y transitorias”, indicó
